It’s a new year and everyone is asking you for your New Year’s Resolutions. 7 out of 10 people will say they are going to lose weight, eat better, get fit, meditate or something along the lines of improving their overall health.
These are all fabulous new year resolutions… but how can you follow through so that by the end of 2019 you have achieved your goals?
Below are some tips to help you achieve your health goals
Small Achievable Goals
Make your first goals small and achievable. Instead of “I will lose 10kg this year”, think about what you need to do to achieve this goal.
“I will eat salad and vegetables 4 times a week”
“I will walk 10,000 steps a day, twice a week”
“I will eat breakfast every morning”
“I will drink a large glass of water with breakfast, lunch and dinner”
“Read a book every month”
“Sit quietly for 10 minutes twice a week’
Share your Goals
Once you have decided on your achievable goals, share them with a friend, family member, a colleague, your doctor, a personal trainer – someone who will encourage and support you.
Ask a friend to join you on a morning or lunch time walk, a swim or yoga session.
Find a qualified trainer or class which suits your hours, interest and budget.
Keep a track of your progress
Put check in dates in your calendar, weekly or monthly, and track how well you are progressing.
If you are regularly achieving all your goals, then review them and set a new challenge.
If you are now walking 10,000 steps every day, perhaps you want to move onto running, so download the “Couch to 5km” app, or join a Park Run in your local area.
There are many apps available which track your health, fitness and diet. Check out which ones will help you achieve your specific goals.
Long Term Vision
How do you envision yourself in one year’s time?
Picture the “New You”.. walking the dog, eating healthy food, playing with your children, playing sport, swimming at the beach, walking up stairs without getting breathless… however you want to look or feel in the future.
Goals for health, happiness and fitness should become regular daily sustainable habits for life.
- Eat healthy food
- Exercise daily
- Get enough sleep
- Drink water
- Learn a new skill
- Mindfulness
Each small step you take towards your goals brings you closer to a healthy life.
