What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates Sydney Inner WestStudio and Reformer Pilates use specially designed pieces of equipment known as apparatus, which utilise a series of springs to create resistance to either  challenge or assist movements. While there is whole suite
of Pilates apparatus that are used in Studio Pilates sessions, Reformer Pilates is predominantly conducted on the Reformer, a low-lying moving bed that is attached to a series of springs used to add
resistance to exercises. Both Studio and Reformer Pilates sessions follow a structured exercise program that aims to train the full body; developing strength, mobility, flexibility, and restore balance to the body.

Mat Pilates primarily focusses on the control and coordination of our own bodyweight through a structured series of exercises intended to build strength, improve stability, mobility, flexibility, and coordination. At times Mat Pilates may make use of small apparatus or equipment such as the Magic Circle (Pilates ring), balls, or resistance bands.

Mat Pilates Sydney Inner WestBoth Mat and Studio/Reformer Pilates are effective at developing a strong core, improving posture,
strength, mobility, flexibility, and muscle definition. Pilates is suitable to all levels of fitness from rehabilitation, pre/post-natal, to elite performance, with all sessions programmed and adaptable to suit your individual needs. Regardless of the type of Pilates session you choose, it is very important to have a certified instructor to guide you and ensure you are performing the exercises correctly and effectively to achieve the best results and benefits.

At Apex Athletic we only run individual or small group Pilates classes to ensure every participant receives individual attention. This will guarantee you are getting the most out of your class. We run Mat Pilates from Snap Fitness in Sydney Olympic Park, and both Mat and Studio Reformer Pilates from our boutique studio in Berala, near Lidcombe.

Can you lose weight doing Pilates?

Weight loss is largely dependent on our calorie consumption and the balance between our calorie intake vs calories burned, i.e. we want to burn more calories than we consume. While our body does burn calories to an extent through natural bodily processes and everyday activity, the addition of exercise can greatly influence the number of calories we burn.
Pilates (both Mat and studio or reformer) will burn calories, which can lead to weight loss when accompanied by a healthy diet, however this is not the primary focus of Pilates as an exercise system. Therefore, it can be beneficial to incorporate additional aerobic (cardio) and/or resistance (weights) training into your routine, while maintaining healthy habits and a suitably balanced diet. A Personal trainer with a thorough understanding of Pilates, aerobic and resistance training is well placed to work with you to build a program around your individual needs and create healthy sustainable habits with your goals in mind.
